ALGAE SA Company was established in 1996 in Therma, Nigrita.
The idea to produce SPIRULINA came earlier in 1992 as a result of a 10 years research, carried out by the faculties of Geology – Geothermy and the Institute of Geological Research, Aristotelion University of Thessalonica.
Our teacher, as we like to call him, Dr Fitikas Michael, professor of Aristotelion University of Thessalonica, came in to the conclusion that the area of Nigrita is not only ideal for the production of SPIRULINA, but it is the only area in Greece and the whole Europe which combines harmonically all the necessary parameters for SPRIRULINA’S plantation. The area’s basic elements are identical to the environment in which the blue-green algae flourish.
Really impressed by this nature’s miracle called SPIRULINA, we decided to risk its’ production, which for many people was considered impossible.
The investment took place in 1997 as part of the European Program LEADER and has been awarded as the most Innovative Idea in Greece for 1998.
Since the year 2000, production is certified by TUV AUSTRIA with EN-ISO 9002.
Being unique in its kind, the production of SPIRULINA in the beginning seemed like a scenario coming out from science fiction!
This pioneer plantation, which was unknown in Greece and innovative for the whole Europe, made us look like aliens, creating a great deal of problems and constraints.
Nowadays, having filled our technological background, we face the future with confidence, while seeking new ways to improve our services and develop new products, infrastructures and procedures.
• THE UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AREA IS THE FUNDAMENTAL FACTOR FOR QUALITY GUARANTEE.
THERMA AREA IN NIGRITA WAS NOT CHOSEN RANDOMLY FOR SPIRULINA’S PLANTING.
As it comes out from the Greek word ‘Therma’, this area represents the largest geothermic field in Greece, with natural springs which give hot water.
The quality of the water is excellent and also this spring gives the famous mineral water ‘NIGRITA’ and supplies the Spa of Therma.
This fact combined with the continuous sunshine of the Greek sky, create the ideal conditions, to allow sprirulina, the miracle plant, to grow and retain all its valuable ingredients.
Our facilities are situated in the second biggest plain in Greece, the plain of Serres, three kilometers south from Nigrita town.
The area according to researches has the longest duration of sunlight in Northern Greece (average sunshine of 285 days per year).
This is due to the morphology of the ground (lower hills on the west and the very high Sierra Beles 60 kilometers up north).
Over her lie the 20.000 square meters of our greenhouses and the two buildings (laboratories and packing rooms).
Here lie the facilities for the production of SPIRULINA. This comprises of up to date’s technology greenhouses, which have been constructed in such way to support this production process, by protecting the special pools were SPIRULINA grows.
Close by is situated the building where harvest and storage take place as well as the well-equipped laboratory. In this lab our scientific staff, with over 35 years of experience in research and algae production, continuously monitors and records the production conditions (Sun light, Temperature, Ph, Oxygen, Density etc.). This enables us to preserve all parameters in optimum level, by duplicating the natural environment of Spirulina in an exact way.
This production environment in conjunction with the warm artesian and sanative water, make the area ideal for greenhouse planting and, especially for the production of SPIRULINA, the area has a perfect profile.
