Iron deficiency anemia is the common type of anemia known also as sideropenic anemia.
It occurs when the dietary intake or absorption of iron is insufficient and hemoglobin cannot be formed.
In premenopausal women, the principal cause of iron deficiency is blood lost during menses.
In both cases higher dietary requirements for iron is needed in order to prevent iron deficiency.
Several studies were undertaken to investigate the effect of supplementation of Spirulina powder on hemoglobin levels of anemic adolescent girls and preschool children (3-6 years). After Spirulina administration for 1-2 months a significant improvement of blood hemoglobin levels was observed (**41).
